Texas opens Long Beach Regional with 3-2 win over UCLA

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Kacy Clemens hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and second-seeded Texas beat UCLA 3-2 to open the Long Beach Regional on Friday.

Bret Boswell added an RBI single in the seventh for the Longhorns (37-22), who are playing their first season under coach David Pierce. The Longhorns have won six baseball national championships, most recently in 2005.

Ryan Kreidler homered in the eighth to narrow it for the Bruins, who won the 2013 College World Series. Travis Jones added a run for Texas with an RBI double in the bottom half.

Jack Stronach hit an RBI single in the ninth but the Bruins couldn't catch up.

Texas starter Nolan Kingham (10-4) allowed one run on six hits through 7 2/3 innings while striking out five.

UCLA's Griffin Canning (7-4) allowed three runs on six hits with six strikeouts through 7 2/3 innings.

The Longhorns will face the winner of the late game between top-seeded Long Beach State and San Diego State.
