COLLEGE STATION -- Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman isn't saying who is starting quarterback will be each week, but it's clear who has emerged as the Aggies' go-to receiver.

Freshman Jeff Fuller caught five passes for 79 yards and a touchdown in A&M's 41-23 loss to Miami last week. He's caught 11 passes this season and leads the team with 137 receiving yards and three TD receptions.

A&M (1-2) plays Army (0-3) Saturday, and Fuller needs one more TD catch to set a single-season freshman record.

The 6-foot-4, 209-pound Fuller was the first recruit Sherman called when he replaced Dennis Franchione in November.

Fuller was already committed to Oklahoma, but changed his mind after talking to Sherman. He made the difficult call to Sooners' coach Bob Stoops, graduated early from high school and started working out with the Aggies in the spring.

Fuller said the month of spring workouts gave him a vital jump start on learning Sherman's offense before training camp began.

Fuller's father, Jeff Fuller Sr., was a hard-hitting safety for A&M from 1980 through 1983 who went on to play for the San Francisco 49ers from 1984 through 1989. His son absorbed plenty of football watching and listening to his father growing up.

MYSTERY LANE:@ Sherman has apparently lost confidence in senior fullback Jorvorskie Lane. The 6-foot, 285-pound Lane didn't get a single carry against Miami and has only seven rushes this season. In 2006, Lane produced a touchdown or first down on 26 of 29 carries on short-yardage third- or fourth-down situations.

While Lane saw action Saturday, junior tailback Keondra Smith got the carries on two short-yardage situations.

Lane is stuck on 44 rushing touchdowns, tied with Darren Lewis (1987-90) for most in school history. This would seem to be a good week for Lane to break out -- he rushed for 101 yards and three touchdowns in A&M's 28-24 win over Army in 2006.

SHAKY START:@ For the most part, Sherman liked what he saw from sophomore quarterback Jerrod Johnson in his first career start last week. That is, once the game started. In pre-game warmups, Johnson threw an interception to senior defensive back Alton Dixon. When he saw that, Sherman asked quarterbacks coach Tom Rossley how he thought Johnson looked. Rossley bluntly told him, "Not very good."

Johnson completed 19 of 32 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns, though he also threw an interception in the Aggies' 41-23 loss. He laughed off the pre-game interception.

EXTRA POINTS:@ A&M is trying to avoid its first 0-3 start at Kyle Field since 1972. The Aggies dropped their first three home games that season to Army, Texas Tech and TCU. ... The Big 12 annouced that the Aggies' Oct. 4 game against Oklahoma State will not be televised. The game will kick off at 6 p.m. in Stillwater. ... Jerrod Johnson's 275 passing yards against Miami set an A&M record for a quarterback making his first career start. ... Senior defensive end Cyril Obiozor now has the longest run of consecutive starts on the team, with 19. Quarterback Stephen McGee's streak of 29 straight starts ended last week.
