KHOU College Preview: Houston Baptist Huskies

It's been an exciting couple of years at Houston Baptist with football on campus.

The Huskies are entering their first official season in the Southland Conference and after lots of hard work; HBU is ready to start building not only traditions, but a winning program.

Two and half years after being introduced as the school's first head coach, Vic Shealy is excited to finally say that he will play for games that count in September.

Last year they played games at Strake Jesuit, but in 2014 they open up Husky stadium on campus which has been a huge boost for the players.

Last season, the Huskies found out what life is like in the Southland when they were greeted with a 74-0 defeat at the hands of Sam Houston. However, they did win 3 games so confidence that they're making progress is evident.

On offense, the Huskies will rely heavily on running back BJ Kelly, who rushed for an average of 91 yards per game last year. Sophomore Ka'Darius Baker is expected to get most of the reps at quarterback and in addition to Kelly; he has plenty of weapons to work with including two UH transfers, Darian Lazard and Kenneth Bibbons.

But the key for HBU will be the offensive line. Shealy understands they have to win the battle up front an aspect which is one of the biggest challenges in starting a program from scratch.

Defensively, the Huskies get a boost with several transfers from BCS programs. CB Eric Amoako from Oregon, CB Tyler Stephenson from Baylor and LB Aaron Benson from Texas will anchor a unit that still feels the sting of some of those lopsided defeats at the hands of Southland Conference foes.
