HOUSTON - On April 9, 2012, Vic Shealy put on the HBU colors for the first time.
Then, he helped unveil the team’s new football helmets, which look pretty nice.
Since then he’s seen a team grow from the ground up. Last fall they held their first fall camp with a handful of players that constituted his first recruiting class.
Now, they’re ready for the first football game as they travel to Huntsville on August 31st to face the Sam Houston Bearkats. No one really knows what they will bring to the table this season, but one thing is for sure, they do have some very good athletes that could make them very fun to watch. UH transfer Darian Lazard joined the Huskies to help make history.
He joins Abilene Christian transfer Jonathan Fleming and freshman Ka’Darius Baker, both of which are competing for the starting quarterback spot. Former Pearland running back Jackie Robinson is sure to blow by some folks as the offense has come a long way since they started and they should put up a fair amount of points.
The defense will have a tough hill to climb, especially in their first game against the Bearkats, but as long as they show improvement all season, then Shealy and his coaching staff will be pleased.
The uncertainty about what the Huskies have to offer is both a good and a bad thing. It is very clear that they are fired up to take the field for the first time, especially after some of these guys have been going up against one another for a year and half.
