HOUSTON --- University of Houston Director of Athletics Mack Rhoades announced Thursday the Cougars would start a two-game football series with UTSA beginning in 2013 at the Alamodome.

Houston will travel to San Antonio on Sept. 21, 2013, to play the Roadrunners in the Alamodome and then host UTSA on Aug. 30, 2014, on John O’Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium. These two contests mark the first games played between the two schools on the gridiron.

"We are very excited about the opportunity to add an up-and-coming program like UTSA to our football schedule," Rhoades said. "We have a large alumni base in the San Antonio area, plus it is a very short drive for our Houston fans to come see us play.

"UTSA is a program that is coached by Larry Coker, who won a national championship with Miami (Fla.) earlier in this decade, and he will have a good football team right away and will be a tough opponent for us. We also are excited UTSA will be paying us a visit the following season at Robertson Stadium."

The University of Texas System Board of Regents unanimously approved UTSA’s Athletics Initiative Business Plan on Dec. 18, 2008, which granted the university permission to add a football program. On March 6, 2009, Coker was introduced as the program’s first head coach.

UTSA will play two years (2011-12) as an NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Independent. It then will notify the NCAA in June 2012 of its intent to advance to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in 2014. The Roadrunners will comply with FBS standards during the 2013 season, and then will seek full FBS membership and bowl eligibility in 2014.

UTSA signed its first recruiting class in February and will redshirt all incoming players during the 2010-11 school year. The first practices will be held this fall and the first game will be against Northeastern (Okla.) State on Sept. 3, 2011, at the Alamodome.

Houston begins its 2010 season on Sept. 4, when it hosts Texas State on John O’Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium. The Cougars were 10-4 last season, captured the Conference USA West Division and played in a bowl game for the fifth straight season.
