HOUSTON—NCAA Division 1 basketball action will take center stage in Katy when the Southland Conference Men’s and Women’s tournament comes to town.
KHOU 11 is a proud sponsor of the tournament, which will take place from March 8 – 12 at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy.
The Southland Conference includes the University of Central Arkansas, Lamar, McNeese State, Nicholls, Northwestern State, Sam Houston State, Southeastern Louisiana, Stephen F. Austin, University of Texas at Arlington, University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi and Texas State.
The 2011 tournament kicks off with the women, who will play four games on March 8. On March 9, the men will play four games.
Then, on March 10, both the men and women will play. All four of those games will be aired on KHOU 11.2.
KHOU 11.2 will also air the women’s championship game at 7 p.m. on March 11.
The men’s final will be broadcast on ESPN2 on March 12.
Southland teams have enjoyed considerable success in their basketball programs since the conference formed more than 47 years ago.
The men’s basketball program has sent two teams to the Sweet Sixteen and one team to the NIT Final Four.
As for the women, in 2008, the Lady Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin became just the eighth Division 1 team to record more than 800 wins.
The conference sponsors 17 championship sports, all of which compete at the NCAA Division 1 level.
Currently, the conference encompasses more than 180,000 students and has an alumni base of more than 920,000.
Famous Southland Conference alumni include Pres. Lyndon Baines Johnson (Texas State), Dan Rather (Sam Houston State), Hunter Pence (UTA) and Gen. Tommy Franks (UTA), among many others.
