HOUSTON – Houston Texans owner Bob McNair and his wife Janice donated $3 million to the construction of Houston Baptist University’s new on-campus football stadium, the school announced Saturday.
"Janice and I believe HBU is one of the leading universities in Christian higher education, we also recognize the values of football and as such, see this as a worthwhile contribution to continue that excellence," the Texans owner said. "As we've seen with the Texans, the sport of football provides a rallying point for the whole community. We see that same dynamic taking shape at HBU, and we are proud to be part of it."
School officials said the McNairs have been long-time supporters of the university and were grateful for the donation.
"Robert and Janice McNair have been long-time friends of HBU, and we are grateful for their support and generosity," HBU President Robert B. Sloan said. "This gift will make a significant impact toward our football stadium, as well as to the entire university."
Last summer, the university completed construction of Dunham Field as well as the building that make up the HBU Football Complex. The McNairs’ donation will be used to help complete the construction of the stadium’s seating, ticketing and press box areas. Construction is set to begin later this month.
HBU will open their first official season as a NCAA Division I FCS competitor at home against McMurry on Sept. 6 in its new stadium.
