HOUSTON -- Texas Southern University’s women’s basketball team has not had a winning season since the late 1970’s, but former WNBA star Cynthia Cooper is trying to change that.
At TSU, Cooper gets to share her hall of fame expertise with young women every day. And it’s a system that has pushed the Lady Tigers to eight straight wins and their best start in school history.
“I didn’t expect us to win this year,” said Cooper. “I expected us to win once I got my first recruiting class.”
This season’s team is basically the same bunch who won only a handful of games last season.
Cooper says she’s also a regular on campus -- checking in to make sure her girls are in class, which is reflected in their improved GPA.
“Women’s basketball has the highest GPA in all of athletics -- 3.2” said Cooper.”
