Judge: Clemens wrongly implicated in 2006 news report on steroids
02:49 AM CST on Friday, December 21, 2007
Roger Clemens’ fight to clear his name in the fallout from the Mitchell report on performance enhancing drugs in baseball got a boost on Thursday.
A judge in Phoenix unsealed an affidavit by former Major League pitcher Jason Grimsley. And despite published reports in 2006, he did not accuse Roger Clemens of using steroids.
Clemens has been under mounting pressure to explain himself ever since the Major League Baseball report on performance enhancing drugs, dubbed the Mitchell report, was released two weeks ago. Clemens has maintained in statements through his attorney and agent that he has never used steroids or human growth hormone.
Part of the nine pages in the Mitchell report focused on the 2006 testimony by Grimsley about the use of performance enhancing drugs within baseball. The Los Angeles Times, which reported to have sources that were familiar with Grimsley’s affidavit, focused much of its story on Clemens supposed use of banned substances based on that affidavit, even though all of the names contained within it were blacked out.
But a look at the unsealed document shows that Clemens is never mentioned in Grimsley’s testimony.
Jose Canseco, Lenny Dykstra, Glenallen Hill, Rafael Palmeiro, Pete Incaviglia and Chuck Knoblauch are all included in Grimsley’s affidavit.
On Thursday, Clemens’ attorney Rusty Hardin when on the offensive.
“When this grossly inaccurate story broke, Roger said it was untrue and the Los Angeles Times chose not to believe him,” Hardin said in a statement. “Roger was telling the truth then, and he is now. Clemens did not take steroids, and anyone who said he did better look for a hell of a good lawyer.”Forums, Photos & More
