JACKSONVILLE, FL - Akeem Hunt is perfectly fine with subscribing to the “better late than never” cliché.
The 2nd year man out of Purdue was one of the final cuts before the season started. He was re-signed to the practice squad and this weekend, called up with Jonathan Grimes out due to an illness.
Hunt not only played vs Jacksonville, he shined.
“I felt like I fed off of my team’s energy,” Hunt said after Sunday’s win. “It was a good team victory”
Hunt had 8 carries for 52 yards vs the Jaguars.
“We had hard practices last week so we just took our energy from there to here,” Hunt said. “Seizing the opportunity when they called my name so I took advantage of it.”
That advice was given to him by fellow running back Lamar Miller, who loved seeing a teammate that has paid his dues get another shot.
“I think he did a great job,” Miller said. “He was being decisive. He was taking advantage of his opportunity. I think he did a great job of that.”
Even his quarterback was impressed.
"Akeem is that guy who has so much bottled-up energy and if you get him the ball, he might be able to spring the big one every single time,” Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler said. “He's so athletic and fast and a smart football player. He had great vision today, was able to hit the holes hard. He had a heck of a game."
Hunt brought explosiveness to a team that has been looking for a spark. His speed and quickness allowed him to convert a critical 3rd and 16 in the 4th quarter. That drive led to the final field goal which ended up being the difference in the game.
“We thought he would give us some juice and he did,” head coach Bill O’Brien said. “He loves football, brings a lot of energy to the locker room.”
“They (coaches) have confidence in me and the team has confidence in me too,” Hunt said. “That’s what keeps me going.”
Hunt played in 7 games for the Texans in 2015.
