Yates tops Royal, advances to 3A title game

AUSTIN, Texas—Joseph Anderson scored 18 points and Houston Yates used a big run to open the third quarter for an 81-70 win over Brookshire Royal on Thursday in the Class 3 semifinals.

Anderson led four Yates players scoring in double figures. Darrion Martin scored 17 points and freshman Lorenzo Phillips scored 17 behind five 3-pointers.

After 12 lead changes in the first half, Yates led 41-38 to start the third before a 16-4 run that included 3-pointers by Anderson and Phillips and dunk by Melvin Swift.

Yates (32-4), the top-ranked team in 3A, also forced 31 Royal turnovers, converting them into 30 points.

Wesley Wilson scored 19 points and De’Shaven Flowers had 17 points and 14 rebounds for Royal (29-10), which rallied to get within seven in the fourth quarter.
