AUSTIN – The Yates Lions defeated Kennedale, 86-79, on Thursday to advance to the Class 3A state championship. The Lions will face Dallas Madison at a scheduled start time of 10 am on Saturday.
Yates (24-8) jumped out to a 50-38 lead over Kennedale (38-1) at halftime. The Wildcats chipped away at that throughout the second half, eventually getting it down to a two point game with less than two minutes left.
Davion Houston, who had 5 points in the game, hit a big three pointer to make it 81-76 in favor of Yates and the Lions wouldn’t look back.
Damion Lewis led the Lions in scoring with 22 points. Jacod Young had 17 points going 5-11 from behind the three point line. J.C. Washington also added 19 points and 17 rebounds.
The game between Yates and Madison will be a re-match of last year’s championship which was won by Madison, 85-72. Coming into the state tournament, Yates was ranked 3rd in the state while Madison is the top ranked team in Class 3A.
