HOUSTON – Houston Texans rookie wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins will not play on Sunday in the team’s third pre-season game against the New Orleans Saints because of a concussion.
Head coach Gary Kubiak made the announcement on Thursday afternoon.
"We’re still at phase one. He feels about the same, so obviously he is not going to play this week. He’s ruled out this week," Kubiak said. "He’s doing better, but the process has not moved past stage one.”
Hopkins sustained the concussion in the second quarter vs. the Dolphins in the Texans second pre-season game. Hopkins left the game early, felt better the next day but is still going through concussion protocol.
Veteran wide receiver Andre Johnson would like to have Hopkins back, but understands it's best for him to be sure he's ready for the opener.
"He just wants to get back on the field and play football. You don’t see anything like that coming where you get a concussion or whatever and you have to miss some time," Johnson said. "He just wants to get back out there, out on the field. It’s just his biggest thing right now.”
