HOUSTON – University of Houston head coach Tony Levine announced on Friday that he has named junior David Piland the starter for next week’s opener against Southern.

Piland, who started most of the games last season, was the favorite to win the job heading into training camp. He beat out freshman John O’Korn who will now serve as the back-up.

Levine did say that both quarterbacks will play during the opener, which is scheduled for a 7:30 pm start at Reliant Stadium.

Last season, Piland completed 57 percent of his passes and threw for 2,929 yards, 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
