HOUSTON - The University of Houston baseball team isn’t devoid of upperclassmen; it’s just that most of the starters on this top-25 team are freshman.

But those freshmen are something special. First Baseman Justin Montemayor leads the team in hitting with a .323 average.

Third baseman Kyle Kirk out of St. Pius High School is the second leading hitter with a .309 average.

Second baseman Jose Vidales out of LaPorte is hitting just below .300 and he’s stolen 8 bases. Vidales was the LaPorte High School quarterback who beat Katy in the playoffs two years ago so he knows all about surpassing the expectations of others.

And winning a series from cross town rival Rice this weekend would be one more sign they’ll be a tough out in the post-season.

KHOU 11 Sports reporter Matt Musil has their story.
