HOUSTON – The University of Houston baseball team lost its Houston College Classic Opener against the Baylor Bears, 5-2, Friday afternoon at Minute Maid Park.
The Cougars fall to 5-4 on the season and 13-18 all-time at the annual tournament.
In his third start, junior Codey Morehouse went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts. He is now 1-2 on the year. Senior Taylor Hammack closed out the contest, allowing two runs on three hits in four innings with three strikeouts.
Junior Jake Runte led all Cougars at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance, including a double and two runs scored.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Runte put the Cougars on the board with his first hit of the game. He singled down the left field line and stole second base before scoring on Ryan Still’s RBI single through the left side.
Baylor capitalized on two Cougar errors in the sixth inning to plate two runners and take a 5-1 lead.
Houston would then close out the contest scoring a single run in the seventh inning. Runte doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on an error by the left fielder before scoring on John Cannon’s sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Houston will continue tournament play at 3:30 p.m. Saturday against Kentucky and wrap-up tournament action at 6 p.m. Sunday against Texas A&M.
