HOUSTON – Houston Texans running back Cierre Wood shined at Notre Dame and helped the Fighting Irish get to the BCS National Championship.
He will be reunited next week with longtime teammate and former roommate Manti Te’o who is with the San Diego Chargers. Everyone always wants to ask him about the Heisman Trophy runner up, but it has nothing to do with football.
“They really don’t ask me about how he plays. His tape speaks for itself. I really don’t get questions on his athletic abilities,” Wood said. “More of the questions are on the things that surrounded him the most, the main reason he was in the limelight.”
More specifically, his fake girlfriend.
“Everybody asks me about Te’o. It’s something that I expected was going to happen,” Wood said. “I got asked on the street a couple of times. I expected it from the locker room and what not.”
The logical question? Did he ever see Te’o speak to her.
“Yeah, I did. It was more along the line of, if I came in here with a goldfish and said, ‘This is my goldfish, Larry.’ You guys are going to go like, ‘Okay.’ It was more along the lines of that,” Wood said. “I would come over to ask for a controller and he’d be like, ‘Come talk to my girl.’ It was on the computer screen and it was blank. I really don’t care. I heard someone talking, so I introduced myself, ‘Hi, I’m Cierre. How are you doing? Nice to meet you,’ and just went on about my business.”
