HOUSTON – The quarterback competition between 3rd year man TJ Yates and 2nd year gunslinger Case Keenum is easily one of the most intriguing story lines of the Texans preseason.
Not only are the fans watching who will come out on top.
The players are starting to take note as well.
“It’s tough man, they’ve both been working their tails off,” Texans left tackle Duane Brown said on Saturday. “Both of them had a very good game in my opinion. It’s kind of hard to judge right now, both make big plays and both found the end zone.”
The Texans defeated the Dolphins 24-17 in their second preseason game. After Matt Schaub played three offensive drives, Case Keenum took over. Keenum went 11 of 18 for 150 yards and a touchdown. He led the team to 10 points a game after leading them to 17 points against Minnesota.
The former University of Houston star is definitely turning some heads amongst his teammates.
“Case man, he’s doing his thing, man. He’s accurate with that ball man,” Texans defensive end Antonio Smith said after the game. “All of them are doing good, but Case is doing his thing.”
“It was a blast, it really was,” Keenum said. “I was back in front of the hometown crowd, in front of Houston. It’s always fun to play here.”
TJ Yates was not to be outdone. He entered the game in the third quarter and proceeded to lead the team down the field for another touchdown. He went 7 of 9 for 84 yards and a score. His TD pass went to tight end Garrett Graham, who scores on a catch run from 33 yards out.
“You have to go out there and perform if you’re in a competition and it makes it that much more fun,” Yates said. “All the quarterbacks right now are playing great football and getting the wins.”
“When you talk about the quarterback position and you talk about the back-up, that’s going to get a lot of attention,” tight end Owen Daniel said. “A guy like Case with all the accolades he’s had and a guy like TJ who won a playoff game, it’s going to happen.”
Head coach Gary Kubiak will most likely play his starters into the third quarter against the New Orleans Saints in the third preseason game.
