HOUSTON — The Houston Texans have released tight end Owen Daniels

He was the team's all-time leader in receptions (358) and receiving yards (4,338) at tight end.

Daniels missed most of the 2013 season with a fractured fibula.

He said Monday the injury had healed completely and he finished rehab in January.

"It's like it never happened," he told the Texans Drew Dougherty. "I feel good in that respect. I’m looking forward to coming in fresh and healthy."

The Texans drafted Daniels, 31, in the fourth round in 2006.

Daniels told the Houston Chronicle on Monday that he was open to restructuring his $6 million contract to help with the salary cap.

"I guess this is a year for me that’s interesting, just because you hear this or you hear that about being here or being a cap casualty or whatever it is. It’s that point of your career where those type of things can happen. I’m aware of that," Daniels said Monday. "I’d like to be here and play out the end of my contract — I feel like I deserve that. I’m looking forward to having that opportunity and building a team that can win a championship with a new staff."

Daniels was popular with fans and teammates. Duane Brown said he was with Daniels when he got the news and is still shocked his friend won't be in the locker room next season.

@owendaniels my dawg for life man I’m a miss you on the field. Good luck to you I know you gonna be aight," Brown tweeted.

"Wow. Can’t believe it #OD," tweeted backup quarterback T.J. Yates.

The Texans saved $4.5 million by releasing Daniels.

They also released cornerback Brice McCain.
