HOUSTON – Jon Rothstein CBSSports.com is reporting that Rice University has hired VCU assistant Mike Rhoades to be their new head coach.

Rhoades has been with Virginia Commonwealth since 2009. Prior to that, Rhoades coached at Division III Randolph-Macon (Virginia). In 10 seasons as a head coach, Rhoades posted a record of 197-76. He made four appearances in the NCAA Tournament.

One of Rhoades’ best seasons at Randolph-Macon was in 2003, when he led the men’s basketball program to a number one ranking, and achieved a program record for wins at 28-2.

Rice parted ways with former coach Ben Braun after finishing the 2013-14 season with a record of 7-23.
