HUMBLE – Phil Mickelson (No. 5), Matt Kuchar (No. 11), Webb Simpson (No. 21), Ian Poulter of England (No. 19) and FedExCup points leader Jimmy Walker (No. 27) are the latest high profile players to join the field at the Shell Houston Open, announced Tournament Director Steve Timms.
The official addition of Mickelson, winner of 42 PGA TOUR titles, including the 2011 Shell Houston Open, and Kuchar puts six of the World Golf Rankings Top 11 next week’s SHO.
Mickelson, the 2013 British Open champion, joins Henrik Stenson of Sweden (No. 3), Rory McIlroy of Ireland (No. 7), Sergio Garcia of Spain (No. 8) and Dustin Johnson (No. 9).
Players have until this Friday to commit to play in the Shell Houston Open, which will be played March 31-April 6 at the Golf Club of Houston’s Tournament Course.
Committed players may also withdraw without penalty by that date. Houston’s TOUR stop is the final opportunity for players not-otherwise-eligible to claim an invitation to The Masters tournament in Augusta, GA.
With Mickelson and Simpson on board the PGA TOUR’s 10th-oldest tournament now has 14 major champions with a combined 25 majors to their credit.
Mickelson, who has five majors, and Simpson, winner of the 2012 U.S. Open, are joined by: Ernie Els (1994 & 1997 U.S. Open, 2002 & 2012 British Open), Angel Cabrera (2007 U.S. Open, 2009 Masters), McIlroy (2012 PGA Championship, 2011 U.S. Open), Keegan Bradley (2011 PGA Championship), Martin Kaymer (2010 PGA Championship), Stewart Cink (2009 British Open), Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland (2011 British Open), Padraig Harrington of Ireland (2007, 2008 British Open & 2008 PGA Championship), South African star Louis Oosthuizen (2010 British Open), Davis Love III (1997 PGA Championship), Lucas Glover (2009 U.S. Open) and Fred Couples (1992 Masters).
Poulter, a four-time Ryder Cup stalwart for the European side, boasts 13 international titles. His two PGA TOUR wins have both come in World Championship Golf events – the 2012 HSBC Champions and the 2010 Accenture World Match Play Championship.
Walker, who played collegiate golf at Baylor, has won three times in 2014 – the Frys.com Open, SONY Open in Hawaii and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He currently has a 529-point lead in the FedExCup points race.
Former SHO champions D.A. Points (2013), Hunter Mahan (2012), Paul Casey (2009) are also entered.
