SUGAR LAND, Texas – The mother and father of Rockets radio play-by-play announcer Craig Ackerman were killed in a crash in Sugar Land on Tuesday, police have confirmed.

Gerald Ackerman and Bonnie Ackerman, both 66, were involved in a wreck shortly after 1 p.m. at the intersection of Austin Parkway and Williams Trace, Sugar Land police said.

A spokesman for the police department said Gerald Ackerman was behind the wheel when his truck left the roadway and hit a light pole. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

Both parents lived in Sugar Land. Their son Craig was named the voice of the Houston Rockets in 2008.

According to an NBA.com bio, Ackerman, 37, has been involved with the Rockets organization for about 18 years. He first started with the team as an intern while studying at Houston Baptist University.

The Rockets are scheduled to take on the Indiana Pacers Wednesday night at the Toyota Center.

The team has not yet commented on the accident.
