HOUSTON – Monster Jam trucks are 12 feet high and 12 feet wide and can run over anything that gets in their way.

The giant vehicles run on methanol, but are mostly fueled by the driver’s guts and adrenaline. Sean Duhon walked away from his job on the New Orleans police force so he could drive professionally.

“One day I was offered a position to drive in Monster Jam and I couldn’t pass up that position. I’m living my dream,” he said.

Most drivers have been racing any and everything with wheels since they were children.

“If it’s a moped, if it’s a wheelchair, cars, trucks, I mean we’re always in the competition mode to race,” driver Morgan Kane said.

Monster truck driving is an actual competition. Drivers get points to determine the winner. A “save” is worth a lot.

“Almost turning over, hitting a sidewall and pulling it out and going back on all fours and continue your run,” Duhon said, explaining what a “save” is.

In March, women and men hope to compete in the finals in Las Vegas, but this weekend, they’re happy to be in Houston.

“I love this place,” Kane said. “I absolutely love Texas. I mean this right here is one of the biggest stadiums I’ve ever been in.”

Those attending should perhaps bring ear plugs.

While the monster trucks are rolling, it’s very loud. Also the first few rows are blocked off because sitting in them would leave fans covered in dust that gets kicked up.

The show Saturday at Reliant Stadium includes a pit party at 2:30 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. Passes are required to attend the pit party where fans can see the trucks up close and meet the drivers.

Prices start at $20 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.
