MANVEL - Football players have always seemed larger than life to Manvel senior Koda Martin.
“Coming in as a freshman, I remember thinking man these guys are so big and so fast and I hope I can be as big as them some day,” Martin says.
Well now, it’s Koda’s turn to be the one everyone looks up to.
“I feel like I’m just a person,” Martin says. “I’ll look up to those kids still.”
Martin has assumed the role of leader for the Mavericks. The 6-7, 250 pound defensive end and tight end is coming off a monster season, one which earned him all district and all state honors, but what makes him great is his constant pursuit of perfection.
“Do the little things along the way during training or whatever so the team can be benefitted,” Martin says. “I love being here and I couldn’t see myself anywhere else.”
That dedication translates to his studies. Koda has a 3.85 GPA. He’s a National Honor Society member and a president of the school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter.
“If I’m just here doing what’s best for me, it’s not worth doing,” Martin says. “It’s about my team, it’s about my brothers.”
After his senior year, Koda will play at Texas A&M where he plans on continuing what he started at Manvel.
“Playing in front of 100,000 fans is just nuts to me, it’s unreal,” Martin says. “It’s hard to imagine myself in that position but it’s happening and god has put me in a great position.”
Congratulations to Manvel High School senior Koda Martin, our KHOU 11 Sports Extra Honda Motors Athlete of the Week.
