PLAINVIEW, Texas – The first-year HBU football program will play its second-straight road game to open the season when it faces Wayland Baptist Saturday, Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. at Greg Sherwood Bulldog Memorial Stadium.
The Huskies (0-1) will be led by freshman quarterback Ka’Darius Baker, who completed 6-of-15 passes for 33 yards in the season-opening loss to fourth-ranked Sam Houston State. Freshman running back B.J. Kelly gained 53 yards on 13 carries and averaged 17.3 yards on six kick returns. Freshman safety Cody Moncure led HBU on defense with eight total tackles, while freshman cornerback Taylor Thompson added seven-and-a-half.
Quarterback Joshua Houghteling completed 8-of-15 passes for 62 yards in Wayland Baptist’s 44-0 season-opening loss to Adams State on Sept. 6. Kendall Roberson, who led the Pioneers with 84.0 rushing yards per game last season, missed last week’s game, but is expected to take the field Saturday. Kaleen Jones, Tyler Smith and Jon-Lucas Poe each recorded eight tackles to lead Wayland Baptist last week.
Wayland Baptist is in its second season as an NAIA program, posting a 2-7 record in 2012. The Huskies and Pioneers have two common opponents this season, Texas College and Oklahoma Baptist.
HBU will have five games remaining during its developmental season following Saturday’s contest, four of which will be played at home. The Huskies host Oklahoma Baptist in the home opener Sept. 28 at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory, then future Southland Conferene foe Abilene Christian Oct. 12 at BBVA Compass Stadium.
