SUGAR LAND, Texas -– The Skeeters announced Tuesday their former pitcher Scott Kazmir had joined the Cleveland Indians as the team’s fifth starter in the 2013 season.

Kazmir, 29, is a Houston native who got his Major League Baseball debut with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2004. He also played for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

He joined the Skeeters starting rotation in July 2012, having started 14 games with the team and going 3-6 and collecting 51 strikeouts, according to the team.

“I think Scott benefitted tremendously from being in this league last year,” said Skeeters Manager Gary Gaetti. “The Skeeters afforded him another opportunity to come out and get some innings and build some confidence in a very competitive setting. His role with the Indians this year is a real testament to what we’re doing in Sugar Land and in the Atlantic League.”

Opening Day for the Sugar Land Skeeters is scheduled for Thursday, April 18.

Opening Day for the Cleveland Indians is scheduled for Monday, April 8.
