GALVESTON – Bob Coffman was the number one ranked decathlete in the world back in 1979 and he was the favorite to win the gold medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow.

Unfortunately, he never got the chance to earn it.

Over 60 countries, including the United States of America, boycotted the 1980 games as a protest to Russia’s invasion of Afghanistan. That meant Coffman would not be able to realize his dream.

Recently, he sat down with KHOU 11 Sports Director Bob Allen to discuss those events and how he still hasn’t forgotten the decision by then President Jimmy Carter.
