PREVIEW STORY UPDATE: Sophomore QB Michael Brewer suffered a back injury and is currently listed as day to day. Freshman Davis Webb and Baker Mayfield have been getting reps during practice and head coach Kliff Kingsbury has indicated both could see time in the season opener against SMU.

--------------

For the first time since Mike Leach left on his Pirate Ship, optimism is really running rampant in Lubbock. Former QB Kliff Kingsbury is back in the mix as the head coach and hopes to build a contender very quickly.

However, he will have to do it with several young and unproven quarterbacks.

Michael Brewer will take over for Seth Doege, but many think freshman Davis Webb has pushed him, at least, more than people may have anticipated. Whoever wins the QB spot, they will have an arsenal at their disposal once again. A full stable of running backs and a wide receiving core that features Eric Ward, Jakeem Grant and Jace Amaro are sure to light up the scoreboard. If Amaro stays healthy, he is arguably one of the best targets in all the Big 12. They do lose 3 starters on the offensive line, but the Red Raiders are sure to fill the gaps.

On the defensive side, Texas Tech will have its 5th defensive coordinator in the last 5 years which means this will be their 5th defensive scheme in 5 years How is that even possible??

But, Kingsbury has to feel pretty good with his front seven. There is some good experience up front and those guys will only get better in 2013. However, the secondary is a completely different issue.

The Red Raiders will feature 4 new starters in the defensive backfield and the way offense is in the big 12, this could pose a huge problems.

Still, veterans like Kerry Hyder on the defensive line should provide some pressure to at least make it interesting for the opposition.
