SUGAR LAND - Like most of us growing up, Simone Manuel loved being in the water when she was a little girl. She started swimming when she was four. 13 years later, she’s still in the water but these days, Simone is a tad bit quicker.
Last month, the Austin high school senior set the American record in the 100 yard free style at the Junior National Championships in Clearwater Florida with a time of 46.75 seconds. In fact, that mark would have been good enough for first at this year’s NCAA Championships.
Simone swims for the First Colony Swim Team, instead of for her high school. It was a decision which she is glad to have made.
Next year, Simone is going to Stanford and she’s excited to finally put on her school’s colors. The goal is to make the US Olympic team for the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro and at the pace she’s on, she is well on her way.
KHOU 11 Sports reporter Daniel Gotera has her story.
