2011 USA Weightlifting Junior Championships coming to Houston

Colorado Springs, CO – USA Weightlifting is pleased to announce that the 2011 USA Weightlifting National Junior Championships will be held in Houston, Texas.

The premier event for athletes ages 20 and younger in the United States, the National Junior Championships are expected to draw more than 150 competitors to Houston in February with the exact dates of the three-day event to be announced at a later time.

"Houston is an excellent city that has hosted countless premier sporting events and we are very excited to work with the Harris County – Houston Sports Authority to host this meet.  Not only is this a wonderful location for our athletes to compete in, but this will be a great chance for Houstonians to come out and see our future Olympians in action," said USA Weightlifting CEO Rick Adams (Colorado Springs, Colo.) 

The host city of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Boxing, Houston will be the home of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Regionals this weekend and has previously played host to other top events, including the NCAA Division II Winter and Spring Festivals as well as the Senior National Championships for gymnastics and judo.

"We believe this prestigious event will not only give more opportunities for our local Houston residents to experience the sport of weightlifting up close and at an elite level, but will also give our city a chance to shine in the national spotlight amongst the best ranked junior athletes."
