Makeup Junkie: Coming this Spring

01:42 PM CDT on Thursday, April 5, 2007

Makeup counters are preparing for spring, trading the rich tones of the previous season for a cheerier look. Their ideas capture the lighthearted mood of the season with luxurious colors and textures. The best part? You don't have to revolutionize your makeup collection to try out the new trends. With a few tips, you'll be right in style.

Be beauty royalty

Spring was once the territory of pinks and peaches, a way to celebrate the warmer days and brighter skies. No more. Purples are getting their turn in the spotlight with pale lavenders and rich violets. Not sure how to incorporate this playful color into your style? Try a deep purple eyeliner. For extra punch, select a light purple shade, like MAC's Petalescent eyeshadow ($13.50, maccosmetics.com) to sweep across the eyelid. Build the color intensity with a sheer plum blush, or keep it subtle with a baby pink. A neutral lipcolor will help focus the attention on the fabulous purples you chose.

Go color crazy

The smoky eyes that added drama to the winter months are getting a colorful makeover. Think bright. Greens, pinks and even blues are all perfect. Remember, less is more, but don't be scared to experiment. Apply a single layer of color all the way around the eye using a small flathead eye brush, such as Sonia Kashuk's small eye shadow brush ($10, Target). Polish the look with a soft pink or nude lipstick. Stay away from high-shine glosses, which compete with the bright hues on your lids. Instead, a satiny finish ties it together.

Show off your shine

Add a sparkle with shimmering metallics. This trend wears well on every part of the face. Gold and silver hues are popular and keep your look fresh and clean. The shine doesn't have to be overwhelming. Start with a shimmering base on your eyelid and browbone and layer smoother textures on top. Or, try this show-stopping trick: use a brightly colored metallic hue just in the center of your eyelid for a little pizzazz every time you blink.

Metallics aren't just for the eyes, either. Gold can actually make a very pretty lip tint. Think of it as a twist on the standard nude lip. Alternatively, soft pink with just a glimmer of silver looks feminine on fair skin. If you're craving a stronger lipcolor, reach for a shimmery rose or coral lipstick. There are plenty of options to dress up your pucker. Just be careful to keep the metallics on either your eyes or lips, not both, to avoid the disco ball look. Blush is a different story, of course. A little gold to highlight your cheekbones never goes out of style.
