Man in custody after downtown Vancouver shooting

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — A man shot a person outside a Starbucks and later exchanged gunfire with police outside a downtown Vancouver tourist attraction before being taken into custody, police said Tuesday.

Police said officers responded to gunfire outside the coffee shop shortly after 11 a.m. and found a man who had been shot.

Sgt. Randy Fincham said the suspect and an officer exchanged gunfire several blocks away near Science World and that both were injured.

"The alleged shooter remains in hospital in serious condition," Fincham said. "The unidentified officer is being treated in hospital for minor injuries."

It was not immediately clear how the officer was injured, and police said further information would be provided later.

Fincham said the man shot outside the coffee shop is in serious condition.

Police said there are no other suspects.
