MOSCOW (AP) — A Moscow court has convicted five men of participating in the murder of renowned journalist Anna Politkovskaya — three of them after being acquitted at an earlier trial.
A jury Tuesday found that Rustam Makhmudov was the triggerman who shot Politkovskaya in the elevator of her Moscow apartment building in 2006 and that four others, including his two brothers, their uncle and a former policeman were accomplices. The two brothers and the policeman had been acquitted in the case in a 2009 trial, but the Supreme Court overruled that verdict and ordered a new trial.
Politkovskaya was noted for her reports in the Novaya Gazeta newspaper that were sharply critical of the Kremlin and its policies in Chechnya. Authorities have not identified the person believed to have ordered the killing.
