MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — A police official says a Somali legislator has been shot and killed by gunmen in the capital, the second attack targeting a lawmaker this week.
Senior police officer Ali Hassan said on Tuesday that the slain lawmaker, Abdiaziz Isaq Mursal, was ambushed as he left his home to go to work in the Madina district of Mogadishu.
On Monday another lawmaker, Isaq Mohamed Rino, was killed in a car bomb blast that also wounded another lawmaker with whom he was traveling. That attack was claimed by the al-Qaida-linked Islamic rebels of al-Shabab.
Al-Shabab militants frequently carry out attacks against government officials, African Union peacekeepers, and foreigners.
The latest attacks may suggest an intensified targeting of members of a parliament that's emerging as a pillar of possible democracy in Somalia.
