CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's state news agency is reporting that authorities in the Suez Canal area have arrested a journalist for allegedly inciting and taking part in violence.
The MENA report Wednesday said Abdel-Rahman Shaheen is suspected of taking part and inciting attacks against police. It said he worked for the Muslim Brotherhood's now-banned newspaper and television station, as well as the Al-Jazeera satellite news network.
Al-Jazeera said Shaheen previously worked as a freelance journalist for its Arabic service.
Egypt's military-backed interim government declared the Brotherhood a terrorist group following the July overthrow of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. It accuses Al-Jazeera of bias. Three of the network's English service journalists are being tried on terrorism-related charges, while an Arabic service journalist has been detained since August.
