GENEVA (AP) — The nationalist Swiss People's Party has called on the government to swiftly limit immigration from Eastern Europe to prevent a mass influx of foreigners this summer.

The demand by the People Party president, Toni Brunner, comes a week after voters narrowly backed a referendum demanding a cap on immigration for all types of foreigners, including those from the European Union, within three years.

In an interview published Sunday, Brunner told Swiss paper Schweiz am Sonntag that the government needs to extend temporary limits on immigration from eight Eastern European countries that expire in June.

Swiss Justice Minister Simonetta Sommaruga told Croatia on Saturday that a planned extension of the free movement of workers agreement to the European Union's newest member has to be put on ice because of the referendum.
