MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) — Nicaraguan national police say 10 people have been killed in a shootout that erupted when officers came upon a band of armed men robbing a grocery store in a northern province.
A police statement says Wednesday's gunbattle in the town of Bocas de Ayapal in Jinotega state left four officers and six gunmen dead. Two people were wounded.
Such a mass killing is unusual in the small Central American country, which has one of the lowest crime rates in the region.
But for months, people have talked of armed groups in the region that have formed against the government of President Daniel Ortega. Authorities say they are bands of common criminals.
