NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Deadly street violence has erupted in the Kenyan port city of Mombassa, after gunmen shot to death a Muslim cleric and three others there last night.

The cleric's supporters allege that the shooting was a reprisal by Kenyan security forces for last month's attack on Nairobi's Westgate Mall that killed more than 60 people. A Somali Islamic extremist group, al-Shabab, claimed responsibility for the mall attack. Another cleric at the mosque had been accused of aiding the group's recruitment efforts before he was gunned down last year.

The young men who took to the streets today blame police for the killings. They burned part of a Salvation Army Church and put burning tires in the road.

Police arriving on the scene fired rifles into the air and lobbed tear gas.

Kenya's Red Cross says four people have been killed in the clashes, including at least one with gunshot wounds.
