DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — A Syrian official says as many as four people have been killed in mortar fire that struck several areas of the capital, Damascus, today.

The state news agency says mortar shells exploded in several parts of the city. A government official says more than 40 people were wounded.

Meanwhile, anti-regime activists say Syrian troops have seized control of a neighborhood in the central city of Homs that is considered a symbol of opposition to the government of Bashar Assad. They say rebels were forced from the neighborhood after two weeks of clashes, shelling and airstrikes.

The recapture of Baba Amr came as opposition representatives took Syria's seat for the first time at an Arab League summit. It's a significant diplomatic boost for the rebels. The Arab League two years ago suspended the Syrian government's membership in the organization, in response to the regime's crackdown on opponents.
