Man crawls to road 3 days after deadly crash

A severely injured man crawled from the wreckage of a fatal crash three days after the vehicle he was driving left an Indiana highway and crashed into tree, police said.

Kevin Bell, 39, of Dover, Pa., suffered injuries to his legs from a Saturday crash on U.S. 50 about 50 miles west of Cincinnati near the Jennings and Ripley county line. His passenger, Nikki K. Reed, 37, of Seymour, Ind., died.

Because of his injuries, Bell was not able to leave the vehicle and crawl back to the road until Monday evening when Indiana State Police found him near the scene, according to the troopers.

At some point Saturday afternoon, Bell lost control of the 1999 Ford Explorer he was driving, police said. The vehicle traveled down an embankment on U.S. 50 and struck a tree.

Reed, who was in the front passenger seat, suffered fatal injuries and died instantly, officials said. Bell was transported to St. Vincent-Jennings Hospital in North Vernon, Ind., and is expected to recover.

Reed's family had reported her missing Sunday, and a missing-person investigation determined that Bell, Reed's boyfriend, had been out of contact with his family since Saturday. Family members said Reed went to Pennsylvania to pick up Bell.

Police, who are continuing to investigate, said the scene of the crash was well off U.S. 50 and not immediately visible from the road.
