Calhoun County, S.C.- Calhoun County deputies have arrested three suspects in connection with a fatal shooting that happened when a Craigslist deal went bad.
Sheriff Thomas Summers says 19-year-old Chavasse Michael Smith and 17-year-old Hasani Dion Smith--who are brothers--are both charged with murder, attempted armed robbery, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. Darion Washington, 20 is charged with accessory after the fact to a felony.
Officers say the Smith brothers contacted 22-year-old Branden Boyd on Craigslist about a cell phone that was for sale. The group agreed to meet up at a truck stop off Interstate 26.
“Our investigation has revealed that both Chavasse Smith and Hasani Smith were armed with handguns as well as the deceased victim," Sheriff Summers said. "While all of the parties involved were negotiating the sale of the cell phone, both suspects and the victim began to shoot at each other, which resulted in the death of Mr. Boyd”, said Sheriff Summers.
According to the sheriff, robbery was the suspects' motive from the start.
“This was a senseless act of violence that occurred over the purchase of a cell phone”, said Sheriff Summers. “It appears from what we have learned, that the Smith brothers contacted the victim through Craigslist and met him with the intent to rob him.”
Chavasse Smith and Washington are now in jail, but Hasani Smith won't be taken into custody until he's released from the hospital for a gunshot wound he suffered during the incident.
