U.S. service member killed in Syria

U.S. officials say an American service member has died following an IED detonation in Syria.

In a statement, officials with the Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve offered condolences but declined to release specifics of the incident, which took place in the vicinity of Ayn Issa, in northern Syria.

The service member’s death comes a day after the task force announced it has conducted 12 strikes using attack, bomber, fighter and remotely piloted aircraft, as well as rocket artillery against ISIL targets in Syria.

“On this Thanksgiving, please be thankful that there are service members willing to take up the fight to protect our homeland from ISIL’s hateful and brutal ideology,” said Lt. Gen. Stephen Townsend, the task force commander.

U.S. troops are part of a multination effort to fight the Islamic State group in the region.
