DALLAS - Swerving and driving erratically along Corinth Street off Riverfront Blvd. Sunday morning, the driver of a 1993 Mazda hatchback slammed into a van that was turning left, causing his own death and seriously injuring his passenger.
Dallas police spokesman Sr. Cpl. Gerardo Monreal said Camon Collins, 35, was driving southbound in the 200 block of N. Corinth Street at about 3 a.m. The man had just turned off Riverfront Blvd., where witnesses told investigators they saw him speeding into the Corinth intersection without the car's headlights on.
A passenger was with Collins and neither were wearing seat belts, Monreal said.
As the driver of a 2001 Chevrolet Express Van turned left in the 100 block of Corinth St. onto the 1600 block of E. 8th St., Collins smashed into the front right portion of the van. Monreal said the impact caused the van to spin 180 degrees counter clockwise. It's unclear if anyone was injured in the van.
Collins died at the scene. The passenger was rushed to Methodist Central hospital with multiple life-threatening blunt force trauma injuries, Monreal said. Doctors found “several small baggies of white powerdy substance believed to be illegal narcotics” on the passenger in the emergency room and moved it to an evidence room.
The passenger has not been identified.
