FORT WORTH, Texas - A woman died Monday night, hours after apparently jumping into a pond trying to rescue two of her dogs that fell through a layer of ice.
A dive team pulled 34-year-old Andrea Benua from the pond more than an hour after she went into the icy water.
At about 10:30 a.m. Monday, animal control received a call about a loose dog running around the pond in a new subdivision in north Fort Worth.
"As [animal control officers] searched the area and followed the dog around the pond, they found a coat, a cellphone and an ID," said Tim Hardeman, Fort Worth Fire Department. "At that time, they called police out."
A second dive team found the woman an hour and fifteen minutes after the initial call. Divers also pulled out two dead dogs, an Italian Greyhound and a Rottweiler puppy.
"They didn't have any children, so their dogs are their children " said Warren Cronin, a friend "... They just loved dogs, rescued dogs."
Benua's friends are still searching the neighborhood for a third small dog that ran away.
Compounding the tragedy, Benua's husband is also in the hospital for an unrelated ailment.
