AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- A union for correctional officers in Texas says understaffing is putting guards at risk during what has been the deadliest year inside state prisons in more than two decades.

The union wants better pay for the nearly 5,000 correctional officers working for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. They say low wages are driving guards away despite the agency offering bonuses to new recruits.

Renewing calls for a pay hike during the Thanksgiving holiday is the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Correctional Employees.

According to the union, a dozen prisoners have died in inmate-on-inmate killings this year.

State prison officials did not immediately return a phone call Friday.
