SAN ANTONIO -- In a city rich in long-standing traditions, San Antonio will start a new one this holiday season.

San Antonio's River Walk is now lit up for the holidays from underwater and KENS 5 got a sneak peak at the city's new holiday attraction. And to top it all off, the River Walk will dazzle while staying green, relying on energy-efficient technology, that is.

"We're very excited about the Museum Reach River Lights," said the Manager of Communications for the San Antonio River Authority, Steven Schauery.

Crews were out all day Thursday making last minute preparations to the Museum Reach River of Lights holiday display, which is located near the historic Pearl Brewery. The festive lighting will make its public debut this weekend. Many people walking by admired the light display.

"I think the lights are really beautiful," Laura Sales said.

The new stretch of the River Walk is taking a different approach to celebrating the holidays compared with the downtown River Walk's hanging tree lights.

In addition to LED holiday lights wrapped around light poles, 50 underwater lights in an array of holiday colors, along with fiber optic lighting features, will highlight the Museum Reach section of the river.

"We wanted to do something different and unique and the one thing we thought of that hasn’t been done yet is actually lighting up the river," Schauery said.

Many agree the lights are a bright hit.

"They’re fantastic," Sales said.

The official kick off for the Museum Reach River of Lights is slated for Dec. 4 through Jan 4.
