FORT WORTH — Two drunk drivers were involved in an accident early Saturday morning that killed two children and critically injured four adults, Fort Worth police said.
It happened at 12:30 a.m. in southeast Fort Worth on Mitchell Boulevard at Highway 287.
Police said the driver of a red Dodge pickup truck was headed north on the service road of Highway 287 when it collided with a green Ford Taurus sedan at the intersection of Mitchell Boulevard.
Investigators said the sedan had the right of way at that intersection, and it was not clear whether the pickup truck observed the stop sign.
There were a total of five people in the sedan; a four-year-old girl was ejected from the vehicle and died later at Cook Children's Medical Center.
The girl's two-year-old sister was dead at the scene. She was identified as Deanna Mata of Fort Worth. Police said she had been improperly secured in a car seat.
Police said the childrens' mother, the man who was driving the Taurus and another male passenger were critically injured, as was the man who was driving the Dodge truck.
Police spokesman Sgt. Pedro Criado said both drivers are suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The pickup driver faces three counts of intoxication assault and two charges of intoxication manslaughter.
The driver of the sedan faces charges of driving while intoxicated with a child under 15 years old.
It was just last Sunday that Kandace Hull and her 13-year-old daughter, Autumn, were killed by a man police say was driving drunk in Lewisville. In that case, the suspect was out on parole for his third DWI conviction.
