SAN MARCOS -- Two people died while running from police in San Marcos.
Just before 3 a.m. Monday, police tried to pull over a suspected drunk driver. Police say the driver didn't stop, choosing instead to speed through the Rio Vista neighborhood.
Investigators say the driver failed to negotiate the roundabout at the intersection of Cheatham and Rio Vista streets. The car crashed into the landscaped concrete median in the center of the roundabout and burst into flames.
Both the driver and passenger in the car were pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger is identified as Charles Lee Crayton, 43, of San Marcos. The driver hasn't been identified, and an autopsy is pending.
Assistant Police Chief Chase Stapp says they are investigating the incident, but believe police followed proper protocol.
He says one officer tried to remove one of the victims from the burning car, but had to abandon the effort due to heat and smoke.
Family at the scene Monday say the driver and passenger were best friends, and both fathers.
