MESQUITE, Texas — Mesquite police said two people were killed Saturday night in what's being investigated as a case of murder and suicide.
Officers responding to a domestic disturbance in the 3600 block of Edgebrook Drive just after 8 p.m. found a 55-year-old man dead in the backyard with a gunshot wound to the chest.
"I know there was a lot of buildup, probably a lot of stuff that was being built up," said Amy Hardage, who lives across the street from her friend, Christina High.
High’s father, 55-year-old Scott High, had been living with her, her two sons and Christina's boyfriend, 32-year-old Dante Woods for several years in the 1,000 square foot frame house.
Hardage said her son was supposed to spend the night at the High household on Saturday night, but backed out at the last minute.
Hardage said her friend told her an argument began at dinner, and it then allegedly escalated with High's father fatally shooting Woods in the stomach and chest.
"They didn't even know he even had a gun, so we don't know where he got it and why," she said.
The Hardages said they were told High's father then walked out of the back door and fatally shot himself.
Hardage and her husband D.J. said Woods was an exceptional father figure to Christina's two sons.
"[Christina] doesn't want to come back to the house," Amy said. "She doesn't want to be in the neighborhood."
