LAWRENCE, Kansas -- U.S. deputies in Kansas have arrested a Catholic priest wanted in Texas on child sex abuse charges.

The U.S. Marshals Service arrested 51-year-old John Fiala in Lawrence on Friday after receiving a tip he was there.

Richard Heffron of the U.S. Marshals Service in Topeka said a warrant was issued Tuesday out of Edwards County, Texas, for Fiala’s arrest on four counts involving sexual abuse of a child. Fiala is being held in the Douglas County jail on $100,000 bond pending an extradition hearing. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer.

The Kansas City Star reported Saturday that Fiala also served in the Kansas City Archdiocese in 2001 and 2002, and that diocese officials say there were no complaints against Fiala during his time in the Kansas City area.
